“Quiet Sun made music that boggles the mind of music nerds, while still being easy to groove on…MAINSTREAM is as fine a progressive rock album as any released in the 1970s, and deserves to be remembered as much more than a Roxy Music offshoot.” – The Big Takeover

Quiet Sun was an English progressive rock band formed in the late 60’s at Dulwich College in South London. Breaking up in 1971, they were short-lived, but their experimental approach and technical proficiency later earned them recognition as an influential cult band in the British progressive music scene. The band featured Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera (guitar), Bill MacCormick (bass), Dave Jarrett (keyboards) and Charles Hayward (drums). Quiet Sun blended progressive rock, experimental, and avant-garde elements; their sound featured complex time signatures, intricate instrumental passages, and a distinctive blend of improvisation with rock intensity.
In 1975, during a break in Roxy Music’s touring schedule, the original members reunited to record their only album, MAINSTREAM. MAINSTREAM also featured Brian Eno and Ian MacCormick (aka Ian MacDonald, ex-Assistant Editor, NME and author). This sole studio album was recorded at Basing Street Studios at the same time as Manzanera’s first solo album, DIAMOND HEAD. DIAMOND HEAD featured versions of Quiet Sun material in several songs: “Frontera” (with Robert Wyatt), “East of Echo”, and “Alma”.
Later in 1976, The 801, a one-off project band featuring Manzanera, Eno, MacCormick, Simon Phillips, Francis Monkman (Curved Air) and Lloyd Watson, incorporated Quiet Sun material into their gigs and their acclaimed live album, 801 LIVE. This included elements of “Sol Caliente”, “Mummy Was an Asteroid, Daddy Was a Small Non-Stick Kitchen Utensil”, and “Rongwrong”, as well as ‘East of Echo’ from DIAMOND HEAD.
